The whale watching season runs from July to November each year. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recognises Hermanus as one of the 12 best whale watching destinations in the world.
Witness the magnificent Southern Right whales that visit Walker Bay in large numbers from June to November each year. The whale population peaks in October when the males arrive for the mating season. Guests have a chance of seeing Bryde’s whale all year round and Humpback whales between May and December. The Killer whale (Orca) is also spotted at Hermanus though sightings are rare.
Hermanus is known for its whale crier who blows a kelp horn when whales are spotted to alert tourists to their presence. In fact, Hermanus has the World’s only whale crier.
The Blue Flag Grotto Beach at Hermanus is known for its stunning sandy beaches and views of the mountains. This beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, beach games and relaxed walks.
Hermanus has the largest wine shop in South Africa stocking a wide variety of internationally acclaimed South African wines.
